Nightjars were at one time called Goatsuckers, probably from a mistaken belief as to the bird's motives for hanging around those insect-attracting animals.

The scientific name for the Order containing Nightjars (and Frogmouths), CAPRIMULGIFORMES, derives from the Latin for goat milkers.
